Murata have introduced the KCM series of metal terminal type multilayer ceramic capacitors with temperature compensating U2J characteristics for automotive applications and the KRM series of metal terminal type multilayer ceramic capacitors for general-purpose industrial applications. These compact surface mount capacitors are ideal for Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) snubber circuits commonly used in automotive and industrial equipment.
A snubber circuit protects power supply equipment that utilizes switching devices such as IGBTs by preventing the occurrence of high-voltage spikes during switching. The capacitor component in the snubber circuit absorbs the surge voltages generated by the inductance of the transformer, wiring, etc., in the equipment and not only protect the switching semiconductors but also peripheral components in the circuit.
As the use of more compact internal modules providing enhanced functionality and the move to Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices with superior heat tolerance characteristics becomes more widespread in automotive and industrial equipment, there is a growing need for electronic components that are smaller and capable of withstanding higher temperatures. The KRM and KCM series of MLCCs have been developed to meet this need, they have lower losses and produce less heat than similar products using ceramic with a high dielectric constant. These metal terminal type multilayer ceramic capacitors use a temperature compensating ceramic with minimal capacitance variation, this makes them ideal for use in snubber circuits that handle large voltages during switching and where compactness and heat tolerance are critical.
Both the KRM general purpose and KCM automotive series of MLCCs are available in surface mount packages measuring 6.1 x 5.1mm (L x W) and thickness of 2.8 or 4.8mm depending on the capacitance value. Capacitances are available from 8.2nF to 94nF in 5% or 10% tolerance, with U2J dielectric temperature characteristics and a choice of voltage ratings, 630Vdc, 1KVdc or 1250Vdc (KRM series only). Operating temperature range is -55°C to +125°C for both series.
The Murata KCM and KRM series are suitable for high voltage switching and snubber circuits in Automotive and General-Purpose Industrial applications respectively.
