The LXRW series from Murata are innovative variable capacitors which allow their capacitance value to be varied by applying a voltage, the capacitance varies proportional to the voltage applied making them ideal for use in frequency tuning circuits.
The LXRW series variable capacitors are available in two compact SMD sizes, the CSP package measuring 0.6 x 0.6mm and a DFN package measuring 1.3 x 0.9mm. They are available in variable capacitance values from 16.5pf to 200pF (depending on the model chosen) allowing for a broad range of applications to be covered, each capacitor allows adjustment of the original 0V capacitance by 50%.
The capacitance can be varied by applying a continuous voltage or an intermittent (polling) voltage.
Continuous applied voltage capacitance adjustment, port 1 & 2
Intermittent / Polling applied voltage capacitance adjustment, port 1 & 2
(on: 40msec, off: 360msec)
The variable capacitors can be used in antenna matching circuits for adjustment of the resonant frequency, video clip below shows an example of this in practice.
Application measurement circuit and demonstration of resonant frequency adjustment
The ability to adjust resonant frequency in this way is very useful, for instance in NFC circuits where the variable capacitor absorbs the antenna L value variance for easier frequency adjustment making it much easier to conduct debugging during certification tests and to make adjustments to antenna frequency when building into the end application enclosure.
The Murata LXRW series of voltage adjustable variable capacitors are suitable for use in frequency tuned application such as HF band and near field communications (NFC) equipment
