Murata’s MEMS resonators are piezoelectric elements that function as mechanical resonators to generate a constant frequency, the recently released WMRAG of 32.768kHz resonators are the smallest currently available on the market.
Utilising MEMS technology has allowed Murata to realize the world’s smallest size resonator with very low ESR characteristics that is currently unachievable by quartz crystal resonators, typically the ESR is 15% lower than equivalent Quartz based technologies. The Murata MEMS resonators achieve excellent frequency accuracy and stable temperature characteristics without the use of active elements to correct the initial frequency and frequency shift by temperature. The device supports high reliability especially in high temperature conditions because it does NOT utilize organic adhesives inside of the package, for this reason they can be used in applications where good high-temperature performance is required, such as in industrial equipment and lighting. This helps designers reduce both power consumption and mounting space in the application.
Murata have also worked with several semiconductor manufacturers including STMicroelectronics to certify the MEMS resonators in reference designs.
Package dimensions
The MEMS resonators uses an ultra-compact chip scale package (CSP) that incorporates the necessary load capacitance for the oscillation circuit. This enables a reduction in the total oscillation circuit space needed, which helps to reduce the final PCB size. Measuring 0.9 x 0.6 x 0.3mm the WMRAG series resonators occupy just 0.70mm2 of PCB real estate, the compact size and integrated load capacitors within the package mean Murata’s MEMS resonator can occupy up to 65% less space on the PCB compared to a quartz based crystal with external load capacitors.
The MEMS resonators are available in 32.768kHz frequency with the option of 4 different operating temperature ranges of -30°C to +85°C, -40°C to +85°C, -40°C to +105°C and -40°C to +125°C.
