Murata has expanded its line-up of 0805 size (2.0mm X 1.25mm), 1206 size (3.2mm X 1.6mm) and 1210 size (3.2mm X 2.5mm) monolithic ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) (GRM series) with the addition of new capacitance values rated at 100µF, 150µF, 220µF and 330µF.
As the functionality of electronic devices becomes more advanced, demand is growing for reduced mounting area and support for higher frequencies when designing power supply circuits for applications such as data processing, servers and communication infrastructure equipment. Murata is working to expand its line-up of high-capacity monolithic ceramic capacitors as one solution to help meet this demand. Murata MLCC have a proven track record in the server field, and in recent years has seen demand continue to grow.
Compared with polymer and tantalum based capacitors typically used in the range of 100µF and above, Murata MLCCs are able to deliver better ESR characteristics and compactness. The lower ESR levels mean that it is possible to replace polymer or tantalum capacitors with MLCCs of a lower capacitance. In addition for circuits where MLCCs are already used and connected in parallel to attain the required capacitance, the new higher-capacitance MLCCs can be used to reduce the overall number of components on the board reducing placement cost, weight and overall space required.
MLCCs can be used in a wide range of applications including decoupling for low voltage drive ICs (CPU's, MCU's, FPGA's, etc.) that are commonly used in data processing, instrumentation, portable products, servers and communication equipment.
The newly released high capacitance MLCCs are available in 0805, 1206 and 1210 sizes in 2.5V, 4V, 6.3V and 10V rated voltages and X5R, X6S, X7U and X7S dielectric.
