CSS Series Current Sense Resistors from Bourns ideal for high power applications, samples available from Anglia

Date Published : 03/08/2023 Share with:

Bourns offers an extensive range of cost-effective current sense resistors designed to help improve system efficiency and reduce losses due to their high measurement accuracy compared to other technologies. The Bourns® CSS series of current sense resistors are manufactured using an Electron Beam (EB) welded metal element construction for high power, high precision and low thermal EMF.

Current sense resistors are becoming more popular in power handling applications due to their high measurement accuracy and relatively low cost compared to other technologies. They are designed to monitor, detect and convert current to an easily measured voltage which is proportional to the current through the device.

The Bourns® CSS Series of surface mount current sense resistors are offered in both 2-terminal and 4-terminal configurations. The 4-terminal versions are available in a 4026 size footprint and provide separate voltage sensing connections to eliminate the effect of lead-wire resistance on the reading across the current carrying connections allowing for high precision 4 kelvin resistance measurements. The popular 2-terminal models are available in three different footprint sizes, 5930, 3920 and 2512.

The CSS models are available in resistance values ranging from 0.2mOhm to 5mOhm in 1% or 5% tolerances with power ratings of up to 15W (depending on the model) and feature ultra-low inductance of less than 3nH across the range.

The CSS current sense resistors are designed with an open frame style structure where the resistance element is raised relative to the terminations to allow airflow under the device, allowing for maximum heat dissipation.

The CSS series exhibits good resistive alloy stability with a specified TCR of ±50 PPM/°C over the ambient temperature range of +20°C to +60°C and the resistors are designed for operation over a wide temperature range of -55°C to +170°C.
