The AD4695/AD4696 devices from Analog Devices are compact, high accuracy, low power, 16-channel, 16-bit, 500kSPS/1 MSPS, multiplexed input precision successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converters (ADC) with Easy Drive features and extensive digital functionality.
The AD4695/AD4696 have been optimized for use in space-constrained multichannel precision data acquisition systems and monitoring circuits, the devices feature a true 16-bit SAR ADC core with no missing codes, a 16-channel, low crosstalk multiplexer, flexible channel sequencer, overvoltage protection clamp circuits on each analog input, on-chip oversampling and decimation, threshold detection and alert indicators, and an autonomous conversion (autocycle) mode.
The Easy Drive features on the AD4695/AD4696 devices relax the drive requirements of the analog front end (AFE) and reference circuitry, whilst analog input high-Z mode and reference input high-Z mode simplify system design, reduce component count and increase channel density by removing the need for dedicated high-speed ADC drivers and reference buffers. The devices overvoltage protection clamps on each of the analog inputs protect the AD4695/AD4696 from overvoltage events and prevent overvoltage events on one channel from degrading performance on other channels.
Functional Block Diagram
Advanced digital functionality makes the AD4695/AD4696 compatible with a variety of low power digital hosts. The low serial peripheral interface (SPI) clock rate requirements, on-chip customizable channel sequencers, and oversampling and decimation reduces the burden on the digital host system. Autocycle mode and threshold detection features enable low power, interrupt-driven firmware design by performing conversions autonomously and generating alerts based on channel-specific threshold limits.
The AD4695/AD4696 devices are available in a compact 5 mm × 5 mm 32-lead LFCSP package with a specified operating temperature range from −40°C to +125°C.

The AD4695/96 16-Channel, 16-bit Easy Drive Multiplexed SAR ADCs are suitable for a wide range of applications where precision and high accuracy are critical including Photodiode monitoring, Medical instrumentation, Vital signs monitoring (VSM), Electronic test and measurement equipment, Automated test equipment (ATE), Instrumentation, Process control and Battery-powered equipment.
Evaluation Board
The devices are supported by the EVAL-AD4696FMCZ evaluation board which is designed to demonstrate AD4696 performance and provide access to its many configuration options via an easy to use ACE plugin graphical interface. The EVAL-AD4696FMCZ allows users to quickly evaluate the performance of the AD4696 with no or minimal hardware modifications. The hardware includes two externally driven analog input channels for evaluating ac performance and 14 channels with dc levels generated on board for evaluating dc and settling performance. The externally driven channels have configurable drive circuitry and interface with precision signal generators via SMA connectors. The AD4696 ACE plugin communicates with the EVAL-AD4696FMCZ hardware through the EVAL-SDP-CH1Z controller board. The software allows AD4696 device configuration via a register map view and easy to use GUIs. The software also enables performing analog-to-digital conversions and provides time and frequency domain analysis tools for quick evaluation of the AD4696.
