TDK has developed the new MLJ-H1005 low-resistance multilayer ferrite inductors for use in NFC (near field communication) applications. NFC is a short-range wireless connectivity technology that enables two NFC-compatible devices to communicate with each other to transfer data or for authentication when placed close to each other.
The MLJ-H1005 low-resistance multilayer ferrite inductors have been designed for use in the LC filters of NFC circuits, for this application it is necessary for inductors to have narrow tolerances to minimize the losses caused by mismatched impedance with the antenna, TDK has developed this line of inductors featuring a tolerance of ±5% to meet this need. It is also important to control inductor losses at the 13.56 MHz communication frequency used in NFC to prevent the reduction of antenna output power, furthermore the AC resistance (Rac) must also be kept low and maintained even as current is applied. By utilising specially developed super low loss materials, the new MLJ-H series also achieves lower Rac during high-current applications vs. the existing MLJ-W series.
The MLJ-1005 series is available in the industry standard 0402 size and comes in inductance values from 56nH to 200nH, rated current is specified from 480 to 950 mA depending on value used.

The use of NFC circuits is rapidly increasing in smartphones, smartwatches, wearables, contactless payment cards, electronic ticketing and other devices. NFC is now projected to grow even faster and be used in more diverse ways as we seek the realization of a completely touchless society, including in cashless payments. TDK has introduced the MLJ series inductors to cater to the challenges encountered by designers who are developing these next generation NFC applications.
