The STMicroelectronics L7983 is a compact, 3.5V-60V, 300mA synchronous DC/DC buck converter with flexible, dynamic-mode selection to satisfy noise-sensitive applications and maximize efficiency at light load.
STMicroelectronics have engineered many innovations into the L7983 allowing control of the low-side power MOSFET to provide a low-noise mode (LNM) with constant switching frequency and an alternative low-consumption mode (LCM). In LCM, the converter maximizes the efficiency while powering low or idle loads. The mode is selected using an external pin that can be controlled dynamically by the application or preset by tying high or low.
With its wide input-voltage range, the L7983 DC/DC buck converter can operate from 12V and 24V industrial buses with a generous safety margin. It is also suited to battery-powered applications and can be used in industrial fail-safe systems, decentralized intelligent nodes, appliances, robotics, communication equipment, and precision-sensing applications that can leverage the easy-to-use low-noise mode of the device.
The device features a high maximum input voltage ensuring robust and reliable performance, the L7983 also enhances design flexibility by allowing a wide switching-frequency range from 200kHz to 2MHz. In addition, optional spread-spectrum dithering helps minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) making it easier for designers to meet regulatory requirements. The device has a quiescent current of just 10µA meaning the converter has minimal impact on system power demand, furthermore an external Enable pin is also provided that reduces the current to just 2.3µA in shutdown mode.
Additional features include support for power sequencing and synchronization to an external clock and built-in safety and protection include soft-start, over-temperature protection, current limiting with pulse-by-pulse sensing, over-voltage protection, and adjustable under-voltage lockout (UVLO) according to the input voltage. There is also integrated compensation circuitry that helps simplifies design and reduce bill-of-materials costs.
Three L7983 variants are available, comprising the L7983PU33R with 3.3V fixed output voltage, L7983PU50R with 5.0V fixed output voltage, and L7983PUR with adjustable output voltage, all devices are capable of delivering 300mA DC output current.
The L7983 is available in a compact 3mm x 3mm DFN10 package and has a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +150°C.
Evaluation Boards
Associated evaluation boards are available for each of the 3 variants, these boards allow designers to evaluate the full features of the devices helping to reduce development time. Each evaluation board is pre-programmed to a switching frequency of 1 MHz, this frequency can be adjusted by applying an external clock on LNM/LCM pin or by changing the frequency programming resistor on the board.
