The LPS27HHW from STMicroelectronics is an ultra-compact piezoresistive absolute pressure sensor which functions as a digital output barometer. Housed in a water resistant package the device comprises of a sensing element with an integrated digital interface allowing communication via I²C, MIPI I3CSM or SPI directly from the pressure sensing element to the application.
The LPS27HHW sensing element is constructed using a suspended membrane manufactured using a reliable and dedicated process developed by STMicroelectronics, the sensor is housed in compact package along with all of the required analog signal conditioning, temperature sensing and digital communication interfaces integrated within the device.
LPS27HHW Device architecture block diagram
The LPS27HHW sensor has an operating voltage range from 1.7V to 3.6V with low current consumption down to just 4uA, the sensor can detect absolute pressure in the range 260hPa to 1260hPa. The device has a 24 bit output and relative accuracy over pressure of ±0.25hPa at 25°C with absolute accuracy over temperature range of ±0.5hPa (+25°C to +65°C) and ±1hPa (0°C to +65°C). Long term stability pressure accuracy is 1hPa per year.
The LPS27HHW is available in a ceramic LGA package with metal lid measuring just 2.7 x 2.7mm with a low profile height of 1.85mm max. The LGA package has holes to allow external pressure to reach the sensing element and a gel inside the IC protects the electrical components from water, the metal cap is grounded electrically allowing for better ESD robustness. The device is guaranteed to operate over a temperature range extending from -40 °C to +85 °C.
MEMS Sensor development platform
Development support for the LPS27HHW MEMS pressure sensor is provided by STMicroelectronics ready-to-use MEMS motherboard (STEVAL-MKI109V3) development platform and the STEVAL-MKI213V1 adapter board pre-fitted with a LPS27HHW sensor. The adapter board is plugged into the standard DIL 24 socket provided on the motherboard and provides access to the complete LPS27HHW pin-out and comes ready-to-use with the required decoupling capacitors on the VDD power supply line.
The development platform and adapter board allows engineers to monitor the behaviour of the MEMS sensor, which can help accelerate time to market and maximize the performance of new product designs. Besides the LPS27HHW this motherboard is compatible with other ST MEMS adapter boards and supports I2C and SPI data modes for very high output data rates. The STEVAL-MKI109V3 professional MEMS tool features a high-performance STM32F401VE microcontroller and flexible power management with software-adjustable power circuitry that allows users to set the sensor supply voltage from 0 to 3.6 V and replicate the operating conditions in the intended application. The board includes accurate power monitoring on sensor supply voltage and current, so external instruments are not required. Users can run a graphical user interface (GUI) like Unico GUI (STSW-MKI109L for Linux, STSW-MKI109M for Mac OSX and STSW-MKI109W for Windows), on a host PC to manage data flow from MEMS sensors and analyse MEMS sensor waveforms, which can help engineers explore the operating modes and power settings to optimize sensor performance and accuracy in the application. The STM32F401VE ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller with DSP and FPU can process much more than sensor readings such as barometric pressure and accelerometer or gyroscope data; it can handle complex datasets like optical or electronic image stabilization (OIS and EIS, respectively) from ST’s advanced 6-axis inertial modules, and can be used to evaluate the latest generation of high-resolution MEMS sensors for industrial applications.
