The ST1PS01 device from STMicroelectronics is a 400mA nano-quiescent step-down buck converter capable of input voltages ranging between 1.8 V and 5.5 V while offering ultra-low-voltage outputs. This converter is specifically designed for applications where high efficiency, PCB size and thickness are the key factors.
The ST1PS01 is currently available in 3 variants (A, D and E), the output voltage on each device can be set using two digital control inputs allowing VOUT from 1.8 V to 3.3 V to be dynamically selected depending on the version used. ST1PS01AJR has digitally selectable output voltages of 1.9V, 2.0V, 2.1V and 2.8V, ST1PS01DJR is 1.8V, 2.3V, 2.5V and 2.8V and ST1PS01EJR is 1.8V, 2.7V, 3.0V and 3.3V. Other voltage optoins are available on request.
The digitally selectable output voltage gives the ST1PS01 step-down converter great flexibility, by connecting a microcontroller to the pins D1 and D0 it can be configured to select one of the four different output voltages available from the device. This capability is very useful and can be used to adjust the output voltage to switch to a low-power mode when the system is going into sleep mode, or to adjust the step-down converter to fit the needs of various tasks and optimize the overall power consumption of the design.
Under light load conditions the ST1PS01 device automatically enters power save mode with total current consumption from the input power supply of 500nA typical; during this condition most of the internal blocks are turned off in order to reach ultra-low power consumption. During power save mode, the load current is supported by the output capacitor.
Thanks to the enhanced PCC (peak current control) the ST1PS01 reaches very high efficiency conversion using just one 2.2 µH inductor, two small capacitors and a pull up resistor. The device employs advanced design circuitry to minimize the quiescent current making it a very flexible converter capable of adapting to the latest generation of low-power Microcontrollers with ever-decreasing power consumptions.
ST1PS01 Block Diagram
The ST1PS01 employs dynamic frequency adjustment enabling it to have a low quiescent current under no load conditions, while also retaining more than 90% efficiency over a wide range of load currents (from 0.1 mA to 100 mA), regardless of the output voltage. To protect against unwanted output voltage conditions, if the input voltage drops to the point where it can cause the output voltage to become unstable, the ST1PS01 switches to 100 % duty cycle operations to ensure that the output voltage tracks the input voltage. When the input voltage stabilises and is higher than the nominal output voltage by 300mV or more, the device resumes normal operating mode.
