Heat is a killer for all electronic systems, as applications get thinner and lighter thermal management has never been more important, yet space and weight restrictions especially in portable mobile devices mean that conventional solutions may not be feasible. The Pyrolytic Graphite Sheet (PGS) material from Panasonic has been designed for applications where excess heat is a problem.
PGS is a new, ultra-light graphite interface film material, developed by Panasonic, which has a thermal conductivity up to 1950W/m.K which is five times greater than copper. It is pliable enough to be cut and folded into complex three dimensional shapes then simply stuck onto the heat source to diffuse the heat or provide a path for heat to flow to a cold wall. These features make PGS highly suitable as an easy-to-use, space-saving high performance thermal management solution.
PGS has a lower thermal resistance than silicon sheet material and graphite products available from other manufacturers. Silicone grease does have an even lower thermal resistance, but it has the disadvantage of drying up over time and losing effectiveness. Silicon Grease can be messy and difficult to apply uniformly making results variable, it is also not suitable for certain applications where migration of the grease into other parts of the system are undesirable for instance in LED lighting systems. PGS material does not have any of these issues.
PGS material is available in plain sheet form or in combination with a number of standard and high heat resistance adhesive options.
