Analog Devices' has introduced the AD5758 digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The new DAC incorporates Analog Devices' second-generation Dynamic Power Control (DPC) which enables high density AOUT modules without requiring de-rating or the need to turn off channels due to thermal build up, this innovative DPC design results in lower cost and more compact designs.
The AD5758 single-channel, voltage and current output digital-to-analog converter (DAC) operates with a power supply range from -33 V (minimum) on AVSS to +33 V (maximum) on AVDD1 with a maximum operating voltage between the two rails of 60 V. On-chip dynamic power control (DPC) minimizes package power dissipation, which is achieved by regulating the supply voltage (VDPC+) to the VIOUT output driver circuitry from 5 V to 27 V using a buck dc-to-dc converter, optimized for minimum on-chip power dissipation. The CHART pin enables a HART® signal to be coupled onto the current output.
The device uses a versatile 4-wire serial peripheral interface (SPI) that operates at clock rates of up to 50 MHz and is compatible with standard SPI, QSPI™, MICROWIRE™, DSP, and microcontroller interface standards. The interface also features an optional SPI cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and a watchdog timer (WDT).
Functional Block Diagram
The AD5758's compact 5 mm x 5 mm size creates the smallest footprint in the industry, its robust construction also requires fewer external protection components, supporting smaller, lower-cost designs. It is engineered with advanced diagnostics that provide visibility to system performance for higher reliability and planned maintenance schedules, the improved diagnostic features include output current monitoring and an integrated 12-bit diagnostic analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The AD5758 also includes output fault protection circuits to safeguard the DAC in the event of a miswire incident, this feature is provided by the inclusion of a fault protection switch on the VIOUT, +VSENSE, and -VSENSE pins.
Typical Features and Benefits
This AD5758 single-channel current/voltage DAC with DPC is designed for channel-to-channel isolated industrial applications in factory automation, process automation, actuator control, programmable logic controller (PLC) and distributed control systems (DCS), HART network connectivity and motor control. The AD5758 is Analog Devices' lowest power industrial DAC.
The AD5758 device is supported by the EVAL-AD5758SDZ evaluation board which allows designers to speed up the time to market of their end product.
