Introducing the BlueNRG Bluetooth® low energy wireless network processor from STMicroelectronics

The BlueNRG from STMicroelectronics is a very low power Bluetooth® low energy (BLE) single-mode network processor, compliant with Bluetooth® specification v4.0. The BlueNRG can act as master or slave with the entire Bluetooth® low energy stack running on the embedded Cortex M0 core and features non-volatile Flash memory allowing in-field stack upgrading.

With its low power consumption of only 10 mA at 1 dBm of output power the BlueNRG allows applications to meet the tight advisable peak current requirements imposed with the use of standard coin cell batteries. Ultra-low-power sleep modes and very short transition times between operating modes allow very low average current consumption, resulting in longer battery life. The BlueNRG can also be interfaced directly with external microcontrollers using SPI transport layer.

The BlueNRG Bluetooth® low energy wireless network processor integrates a 2.4 GHz RF transceiver and a powerful Cortex-M0 microcontroller, on which a complete power-optimized stack for Bluetooth® single mode protocol runs, providing:

  • Full master and slave role support
  • GAP: central, peripheral, observer or broadcaster roles
  • ATT/GATT: client and server
  • SM: privacy, authentication and authorization
  • L2CAP
  • Link Layer: AES-128 encryption and decryption

To aid development, STMicroelectronics have recently launched the X-NUCLEO-IDB04A1 Bluetooth® low energy evaluation board to allow expansion of the STM32 NUCLEO boards. It is compatible with the Arduino UNO R3 connector layout. The X-NUCLEO-IDB04A1 interfaces with the STM32 MCU via SPI pin, and the user can change the default SPI clock, the SPI chip select and SPI IRQ by changing one resistor on the evaluation board.
